Cheapest country to buy photography equipment?

Is it the USA? If so which state?

Also, If you go on holiday and bought a camera would you get hit by customs on the way back? How would they know you didn't just take it over with you when you went?

I could do with a holiday!

Re: Cheapest country to buy photography equipment?

I'm not sure if it is the USA, I know people that go to Hong Kong, or Singapore and it works out very reasonable. I always worry about warranties, when buying from another country.

Also, if buying from the States, don't forget to add Sales Tax onto the price, and it varies from State to State.

Just a side note here. There is no sales tax in my state of Oregon. I believe New Jersey also has no sales tax. You can google for the best price using shopping robots such as www.mysimon.com.

Re: Cheapest country to buy photography equipment?

I've heard there are no sales taxes in Oregon too what's it like as a place to holiday Bob? (Lovely place to photograph going by your pics!) Which retailers are the best/cheapest in the US? Are they all pretty good on that website Bob?

Don't most Nikons come with international warranties? Or is that only from Hong Kong? :-/

If you are thinking of a holiday to buy your gear Oregon will be the most beautiful for the next 5 months. It's truly paradise on earth. High temperature around 80F. The absolute best months are September and October when the leaves are in full color, usually occuring Octover 1-15. Then the rainy season kicks in. Because I stop working the end of June I can't wait to hit the road. Google Oregon for Canon Beach, Multnomah Falls, Silver Falls State Park, Crater Lake National Park, Columbia River Gorge.

As far as best camera dealers I always start with www.amazon.com then check http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ & http://www.adorama.com/Als.Main/Categories/Photography/Camera & read what this site has to say. http://photo.net/equipment/where-to-buy

Were you to visit here you could have the purchase sent to my address so you could get it tax free and pick it up at my place when you get here. I'd be glad to treat you to dinner.

Re: Cheapest country to buy photography equipment?

Thanks Bob! I may hold you to that too!

I've just looked at the prices, and for some reason they are working out pretty much the same as in the UK... think it must be because of a weak £ at the mo :-/

Re: Cheapest country to buy photography equipment?

The prices have been very similar for awhile now, sometimes a lens or a certain camera is much cheaper, I know my D300 was a lot cheaper here.

You just have to shop around,B&H and Adorama are the two I would recommend ,and Amazon, there are a lot that are too good to be true

According to Wiki, the 5 states with no Sales Tax are Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. So, everybody is visiting Bob xxx

Re: Cheapest country to buy photography equipment?

Thanks both - tho it does look like I'll be better off buying here as the difference is so small at present.

Wonder what the prices are like in Hong Kong..

Re: Cheapest country to buy photography equipment?

MS
Looks like you will be buying for everyone and shipping them over as presents to avoid import duties and tax.
