Poser

Friend of a friend asked if I'd take some photos of her son, I only normally do animals and this is my 1st attempt at going out specifically to take people portraits like this, thought it would be a nice change, and a challenge to do so here we go, he was actually great fun to photograph, such a poser and he loved it! The internal 1's were taken with 1 off camera flash, I prefer natural light and my knowledge of flash is not great, was not a lot of space to play with either.

Re: Poser

Thanks Azz, no they were all shot in RAW, then converted in Lightroom, I played around with the balance a little.

Try bouncing the flash off the ceiling, this should eliminate the shadows behind the lad.

Re: Poser

5 and maybe 9 for me. The others look a bit flat and a bit posed but particularly i like 5. I think you could bring more out of some of the others with Photoshop, even removing the elbow and bring out the sparkle a little. You need have some pictures done in PP that please your friend but also gives the lad something to impress his friends with. You could give him something contempory, maybe even giving rough edges or a bit angled.

Not easy making pictures of posed kids. I guess kids like Little Me's are well used to being uin hundreds of pictures and act naturally but this boy seems a little posed and not just getting on with it.

I don't mean to be too harsh, just some ideas to bring more out the same pictures in PP. To be honest i would have probably ended up with similar in a session.

Edit... looked again, happy to add in 2 and 7... 5 not so sure...maybe looks a bit fed up... I think trying several in mono, or maybe some effects like in teen mags...

Re: Poser

Well done for getting out of your comfort zone, and if you shot them in RAW I would have a fiddle with your WB. I like the desaturated shot 7, and 1 and 5 have a nice naturalness to them.

If you are interested in getting to grips with your flash, visit Stobist http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ it's fab and full of everything lighting.
