Thats what I have thought about Azz, it only stops vertical movement, you'll always have lateral movement, both sideways, and back and forth.

There is nothing to stop it moving sideways, the photographer has to hold it steady. However you are less likely to get camera shake when using a monopod as it takes the weight off you.

My hubby got me a jessops tripod for christmas, it's not what i would of gone for but it is good.

I've got the Slick Colman tripod and it's great when I'm using the telephoto lens. As the lens doesn't have IS built in, I end up with chronic camera shake

I also have the Slick mini tripod, which is ideal for close to the ground photo's.

I think I need a tripod, do all tripods fit all camera, or is there certain ones for certain makes

As far as I know, a large majority of tripods/monopods fit all camera's

Yes, it's a universal screw fixture, the Slik tripod I said I had is still available.
It's got supports for the legs that you can adjust, makes it really rigid, and a wind up center pole with a pan and tilt camera holder.
