x2 converter...

Karl just bought me a converter from the Olympus shop - which fits my old canon etc. But I'm not entirely sure what I need to be aware of. I've done a search on here, but before I go out snapping away, I want to know exactly what I need to be aware of when photographing. Mostly it's birds I want to photograph... so any advice gratefully received.

This is an old SLR mind, not digital, and will be using it with either a Prinzflex 80-200mm 1:4.5 - 5.6 Macro and/or Hoya HMC Zoom 38-70mm 1:3.5

(also, can someone explain in very clear english what all those numbers mean? )

Re: x2 converter...

I don't have any experience of them myself sorry, but the numbers for the lens:

80-200mm that's the focal length. Basically meaning it starts at 80 and zooms in all the way to 200.

1: is the focal length multiplier (ie diff between a full frame and cropped sensor)

4.5-5.6 is the Aperture, or 'f' number.

A larger aperture i.e. a smaller f-number has a shallow depth of field (DOF). Anything behind or in front of the main focus area will be blurred. A smaller aperture i.e larger f-number, e.g. f12 has a greater DOF. Items within a certain range behind or in front of the main focus point will also appear fairly sharp.

Re: x2 converter...

bare in mind with a 2x converter.. on some lenses it may not fit, or if you have auto focus it may not work with it and you will have to manually focus everything...

also your 80-200 will be a 160-400 (roughly)... but this also doubles you aperture numbers (f stops) 20 your 4.5 will now be an f.9!! so you will need a lot of natural light for the image to work properly and you may have to compromise on your ISO (will thats what it is for digital but i take it for film you have a set ISO of whatever the film is!!).

Re: x2 converter...

yep, I think I had that all right then! Thanks for confirming what I'd read - but I wanted to be sure I'd not just misunderstood everything lol!

I don't have autofocus anyway - so that's not a bother - and usually try to shoot in good light anyway (used to this with my compact). Hopefully the pics will come out OK - we shall see! So far, it fits all the lenses I own
