Taking pics through mesh or wire???

Went out with kids today, to a local animal centre, and took zillions of pics, but quite a few of the animals such as owls, polecats etc were behind mesh, quite a fine mesh too. How do you deal with this? I did get some okay shots, but I was disappointed in quite a few of them

I don't think there's a way round it, but to go to a place where they have glass instead... ?

Focusing through the wire usually works...

Re: Taking pics through mesh or wire???

The trick is to get the camera right up against the mesh. the camera will focus on the animal and ignore the mesh.

An example is

Here you can see the mesh on the other side of the enclosure that the picture was taken thru

As close as you can without damaging the lens in the glass, use an extended finger away from and past the lens barrel as a guide if you are not sure how close you are to the mesh

Thanks Bazza, will remember to stick my finger out
I have visions of clunking my new toy into a wire fence

Re: Taking pics through mesh or wire???

As you can see this also works when taking close ups thru mesh. The pic could be improved with some editing, but thought I would show it as taken which gives a far better idea on what to expect. you can just see on the branch to the left the lighter colour which would have been the mesh. This would be sorted with editing.

Just a tip, make sure there is no one knocking the mesh further away as it could put the pic out of focus or hit the lens. One reason for the finger trick as well being used as a gauge, if the mesh moves so does your camera.
