Re: Balvaird Castle - First Play with new lens

Thanks for that Phil. I'm thinking of getting the Canon 17 - 40 f4 to use with the 5D MkII.

That would give me the same angle of view as 11mm on a cropped sensor so it was good to see your pictures to give me an idea of what they are capable of.

Bet you'll be out again with it soon

That's a great lens Steve. I think I said in the thread about wide angle lenses that I'd be after the 17-40mm f.4.0 L lens if I had full frame.

The 16-35mm f.2.8L is a bit wider and faster but obviously more expensive.

Nearly twice as much and some of the reviews I've read, the 17-40mm is a bit sharper. To be honest, I don't think I could justify going for the 16-35mm. Her in doors would go ape

I didn't realise there was such a difference is price

To be honest I think the 17-40 would be the better option anyway.

Unlike long lenses which you need for wildlife, I'd say the max aperture (speed of the lens) isn't really the big selling point of a wide angle lens anyway.

Sharpness over the bigger dof (small aperture settings) would be more important.

Re: Balvaird Castle - First Play with new lens

Only one comment, the blue of the sky varies too much between the photos, looks as if the deep blue sky photos have been over PP . Other than that yes I do like the photos.

Re: Balvaird Castle - First Play with new lens

I was looking at the b+w Castle shot on your architecture album trying to find out which Castle it was when I came across these shots in my search, great shots and a great looking Castle with lovely surroundings.

Blimey Grant - these are a blast from the past. I've not even got that lens anymore. I must update my YoP albums !
