Re: Lightroom help [general]

Personally, I don't think you can make an indifferent image great by editing it. An image can be helped by skilful processing and editing but no amount of work will make a bad image a great image.

The most important part of the image creation process is he actual capture of the image. Get that right and you are 90% of the way to a great image.

Re: Lightroom help [general]

There is only a certain amount of adjustment that can be made in Lightroom or in any editor for that matter.

If you try to increase the exposure of an image by more than 1.5 stops you will see degradation in the quality of the image. Similarly with fill lighting or recovery. Yes you can recover an image that is over or under exposed but the result is not as good as an image properly exposed within the camera and therefore not needing adjustment.

This holds for all editing or processing. The less you have to do the better the final image.

Re: Lightroom help [general]

So really [apart from the cataloging] lightroom is not much better than photoshop?

or is it just a matter of preference?

Re: Lightroom help [general]

I would go to as far as to say that Lightroom for just editing is not as good as photoshop.

Lightroom however is far better package for cataloguing, raw processing, and adjustments. My workflow is far smoother and quicker than when I used PS and Bridge for processing raw files and that is why I like Lightroom so much. Photoshop is however a far more powerful manipulation program.
