Colour quality

Hi, this forum has been recommended to me as a great source of information and advice.
As a complete beginner with no experience of photography, I’m struggling with some basic issues.
I have a canon 500d which i love but I’m finding my pictures come out rather washed out, without the vibrant colours people here are able to capture.
I mess around in photoshop a bit to brighten them up only to find I’ve made more of a mess. The subject matter doesn’t really matter, it could be a landscape or a close up and i still get the same dull picture.
Any help will be gratefully received....

Re: Colour quality

Hi Andrea, and welcome to Yo!

I'm not a Canon user myself, and maybe some of the others will be able to go into things in a bit more detail with you, but I was just wondering...are your pictures washed out, as in, really bright, or are they dull, as in dark? You mentioned both in your question.

Is there any chance you could maybe post a couple of shots to give us a better idea of what you mean?

It sounds like it could simply be a matter of choosing the right F.stop to shoot on for the particular lens and location your shooting in, but we'll know better once we've seen a couple of examples.

Re: Colour quality

Hi Andrea and welcome - I'm not a Canon user myself either, but on the Nikons we have different colours modes, one of which is vivid that gives really vibrant colours... does you Canon have different colour modes you could experiment with?

Re: Colour quality

Hi, thanks for the reply's. It's hard to give you some examples because i usually delete them straight away, however, here's a few of the worst

I use auto, semi auto and occationally manual setting. Have no idea if canon offers colour modes,i'm really new to it all so i wouldn't know where to look

Re: Colour quality

Hi and welcome to the forum

Dont worry theres nothing wrong with your camera and overall they are exposed well. You need to understand that most of the vibrant images you see have gone through post production in software such as photoshop.

Ill / or others will elaborate more - im just scoffing a chicken legend from mcdonalds at the mo to go indepth!!

Re: Colour quality

McDonalds ! - I'm shocked !

Not too much of concern there.

The sky is pale but I'm guessing it was on that day anyway. Not much you can do about that afterwards.

Do you have any photo editing software ?

PS

Where was that first picture taken ?

Re: Colour quality

Hello! Welcome to YoP.
I would say most of my pictures start off with colours like that, then I use Photoshop Elelmets to boost them.
Photoshopping is a real skill in its own right. What kinds of processes have you been trying?
