Quest For Fireplaces

My friend, Warren, and I made our road trip atop Mt Hood today to take in Timberline Lodge. We were hunting for new fireplaces to photograph on a request from Phil over on the YO forum. Phil fancies someday traveling to Oregon and going there. I hope he makes it while he's still young enough to enjoy it. Here's what I came up with during the quest.

#1 - Bottom floor fireplace

#2 - Main hexigonal two story high fireplace on second floor

#3 - Staircase to second floor

#4 - Day Care Lodge next to Timberline Lodge

Re: Quest For Fireplaces

There's nothing small about anything at the lodge. I love wood so I was transfixed by how massive everything was there.

Did you take an exterior shots of the lodge?

I passed on doing that this time Suzy because heavy renovation was in progress involving a lot of scaffolding and building wrap. It wasn't very photogenic. Check out some great photos on their site. http://www.timberlinelodge.com/ There are some photos of Chipmunks that live in the area. We ran across them walking in the parking lot approaching the lodge. They are so tame they eat from your hand.

Re: Quest For Fireplaces

Great to see you made the trip Bob and it looks like you had a great day for it too.

Some great shots there.

Have to agree that two storey fireplace is a monster.

Shame that the exterior wasn't the best for photography but I guess you can't have everything.

Photographing the larger fireplace because you'll need an extremely wide angle lens to get it all in frame. The balcony rail doesn't allow you to back up to obtain a wider angle. Anyway, I really enjoyed the trip and have added to my fireplace collection. I also affirmed my techniques in photographing indoor areas using a camera mounted tripod with the camera set to continuous shooting, bracketed 3 frame sets at 2.0 stop increments and a wired remote trigger. My D90 does not the ability to lock the mirror up but I can employ a trigger delay mode. Stability, stability, stability. I used an F20 f-stop with at least a 30 second exposure at an ISO set at 200.
