Poppy, contre-jour experiments

Stepping out of my comfort zone (i.e. nice easy non-contrasty natural light with the sun behind me) and doing some contre-jour experiments:

#1 – Initial shot

I liked the backlight spilling across the petals, cloudless sky and also the lens flare. Hated the messy composition though – telegraph wire, chimney pot, dead seed head……need I say more?

#2 – Second attempt

Getting there in terms of composition and prefer the colour in this, particularly the vivid blue sky background, but somehow lost some of what I wanted to achieve.

Any advice in terms of reshooting this flower or subsequent PP on the images already taken would be much appreciated.

Thanking you in advance for your help,
Alison

Re: Poppy, contre-jour experiments

Look good, esp the 2nd one Alison.

Re PP, if you have photoshop, try, image > adjustments > variations, then take fine/coarse slider down a bit and add some cyan

Re: Poppy, contre-jour experiments

Thanks all - sorry I've not worked out how to do quotes yet

Jack Russell, your poppies are stunning and the flare is very much part of what I was trying to capture. And I thought I'd had an original idea for once! Still a few more blooms left around here (plus some blue skies forecast for the rest of the week) so I'll go back and try again. Did you use any PP on those shots?

Azz, thank you for the Photoshop tip. I use CS3 Extended and when I go into image > adjustments the variations option is greyed out. Do I need to change this from RAW or to an 8 bit image or something?

Cheers for the encouraging comments Pepsieileen

Re: Poppy, contre-jour experiments

Number 2 is great - lovely colour in it, and the angle is a little different, so that gives it an added interest.
