A selection from Whipsnade.

First time with the new 120-400mm Sigma and its HEAVY! It takes some getting used to, quite a difference in size to the 70-200mm. These are the first results, improvements to be made, but its a start. The day was dull, sky always was white with bits of darker occasionally and I think we see a blue bit at one time!

Not a good shot cos of the concrete block thingy but he was dead cute and it was the only time he "escaped" from his mom!

Re: A selection from Whipsnade.

Thanks for that guys. Just a quick question. I was advised that if you use a mono or tripod, that you do not use the OS (stabilizer) is that correct, what effect would it have adversely?

Re: A selection from Whipsnade.

Great shots Dawn, bet you are pleased with that lens I love all your shots especially from #5 onwards

I don't have IS on any of my lenses but I'm certain you have to switch it off (Canon lenses) if your lens is mounted on a tripod . I think you would get OOF shots with it switched on, Dawn. Just done a quick search and discovered that any new IS lenses from Canon work normally when mounted on a tripod. I would look on Sigma's site for any info or just try it switched on and off while on your tripod and see how it works

Re: A selection from Whipsnade.

Check to see if the lens has a thing called 'tripod detection'. Some newer lenses have this feature which enables you to just leave the IS on all the time.

If not - switch the IS off. I think the theory is that the IS goes off searching for a wobble and if there isn't one because of a rigid tripod - the search itself causes the wobble.

The newer all singing all dancing Canon L lenses with IS have IS on/off for different directions (up down / left right) and I think some people switch some of it off but that's all pie in the sky stuff to me.

Re: A selection from Whipsnade.

There are some wonderful shots in this set. I love the lion & Meerkat photos. On a side note please number your posts when there are more than two photos so we can better refer to them. Do you use a tripod when shooting with such a big lens? If so, which one do you use?
