Re: Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG - Eventually it's arrived...

Our kid (Fudgeley) has this lens and I've had some pretty good shots of the dogs etc when I've played with it.

The Macro switch can be a bit of fiddle - you will need to be at max length otherwise it locks.

As with any 300mm lens - it may be a test for moon shots. I've stuck a 3x converter on my 300mm and I'm still shocked at how far away it is !

Look forward to the results though !

Can I just ask, I was about to buy this lens for my D40X , but the woman in the shop said it is not compatible for my camera..she said it will not allow auto focus..

Yet on jessops site it says it is compatible???

Re: Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG - Eventually it's arrived...

You'll have to check the lens itself for the following :

70-300mm non-APO No Built-In Motor DG Macro (black ring) - This is the cheapest and quite frankly not worth your while

70-300mm APO No Built-In Motor DG Macro (red ring and aperture ring at lens mount) - Will not AF on your D40/60

70-300mm APO w/ Built-In Motor DG Macro (red ring and AF/MF switch at lens mount) - Will AF, but it is not HSM, so will be noisy and might be a bit slow.

Coloured ring is demonstrated here :

Kit 1
Nikon D80
Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR
Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 ED VR
Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX DG ASPHERICAL RF
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG
Sigma 24-70mm f2.8
Nikon SB600
My Compact/P&S: Sony DSC-T200

So do you think it worth buying.. can you get the equivalent in a Nikon lens

Re: Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG - Eventually it's arrived...

Do not own nor used that particular lens but do own a Sigma 28mm - 300mm 3.5 - 6.3 macro which I bought for use at dog shows, it fulfils this function very well. It is not so hot at the full telephoto end but the wide and macro is good. It was very cheap and does not owe me anything as it has more than coped with the work I bought it for and with my camera, Pentax, is fully functioning.
Kit 1
Pentax K7
Pentax 60-250mm
Sigma 105mm Macro
Pentax 12-24mm
Pentax 50mm 1.4
Sigma 50-500mm (Bigma)
Kit 2
Pentax K20d
Lens as other body
