55-200m a good walkabout lens?

I'm not fussed on carrying extra lenses, so would 55-200 be ok?

Also, will this fit my D40? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-55-200...2422064&sr=8-4

I'm guessing it will, but there are two models and that confused me lol!

Thats a good price for the lens Azz - try to avoid the DX ED G version as its not as high a quality as this one. Its perfect for a walk about

Thanks K.. I'm very tempted!

Wondering if I should go for the non-vr 70-300 tho.. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-Af-70-...2422064&sr=8-4

Wonder if I'd really miss vr?

Re: 55-200m a good walkabout lens?

TBH i think your best with 55-200mm Azz. This one imo is little more substandard. With you being a summer shooter (aka hate the col so rarely venture out - like me! lol) i doubt the VR would have much impact anyway. You would be using higher shutter speeds of 60+ and you also shoot alot of landscapes where you will be using your tripod aswell.........

I think that's the one I've got, on the lens it says 'Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5.6G ED'

Hope that helps with your decision Azz the latest pics I took of the swans and other water birds were taken with it.

I've not done much with it yet, but I'm quite pleased with the results so far, but if it's not as high a quality as the one you're looking at, then I may just have to update soonish but I'm not complaining as my friends BIL let me have it for £40

Re: 55-200m a good walkabout lens?

Typical!

I personally wouldn't consider a 55-200mm lens to be a good walk around one (this is just a general observation and not one aimed at that particular lens, I don't know much about that particular model as it is a Nikon ). When I have been part of this discussion elsewhere, the general consensus is that even 24/28mm lenses aren't wide enough to be good walkarounds on a cropped sensor. Saying that I used to use my 28-135mm as a walkaround and it suited me perfectly fine On the occasion I have gone out with only my 70-300mm, I have missed several shots that I would have otherwise have taken though.
