Telephoto (LONG) Landscapes - Anybody doing it ?

I've spent many years enjoying landscape photography. Up to now I would say 90% of my landscape shots are 'wide' or at least 'short' shots. You know the thing - lead in lines, foreground interest, sharp front to back etc etc. I'm happy with my results but (excuse the pun) I'd like to try a new 'angle' on it.

I've recently purchased a 24-105L and (more relevant to the post) a 100-400L lens and whilst I didn't have landscape photography in mind when I bought the long one - I'm thinking about embarking on a something new to me - landscapes with really long focal lengths.

I'm not thinking about pictures of a hill in the distance but more a style based on using longer lengths to 'apparently' compress perspective or use the fall off of light in the distance to create depth. Highlighting haze between layers of mountains, hills, trees or something more graphic perhaps ?

Apologies if this all sounds a bit vague but that's my reason for posting. I was hoping I could ask for some examples of landscape shots taken with long focal lengths or at least get some ideas and inspiration to try and break the mould a bit........

Re: Telephoto (LONG) Landscapes - Anybody doing it ?

I find one of the advantages is being able to get pictures where I can't get to. For example taking pictures of birds on an island or on a cliff. Havn't really tried doing landscapes with a 400mm lens, I think the field of view is too restrictive unless a particular feature is the main focal point then I would be doubtful.
A 100-400mm lens isn't really designed for landscape kind of work

Granted - it may not be the primary use for a long lens but Google 'long lens landscapes' and you'll see plenty of interesting landscapes shots where focal lengths of 200mm+ have been used to great effect.

Can't spend too long looking as I'm in work but the following two links kind of demonstrate what I was thinking......

http://digital-photography-school.co...-focal-lengths

In the following link - the shots called 'Magic Carpet' & 'Grasslands of Lochend' are the kind of thing I mean. Both shots have retained the closer elements but the long focal length has really given the impression of the depth being compressed.

Sounds good, I don't agree with certain lenses for certain photography, it's good to mix things up!

Some great examples there.
