85mm more popular than 50mm?

Been looking on pbase, and it seems the 85MM of both Nikon and Canon are quite high up in their 'most searched' list.

I've often thought the nifty fiftys were most popular... ? :-/

The 50mm is more popular as you get alot for your money. The 85mm tends to be sharper and better for portaits. This is next on my list!

Re: 85mm more popular than 50mm?

Well I have both the 50mm f1.4 and the 85mm f1.8 (Canon obviously ). The 85mm will certainly produce better results than the 'nifty fifty' which is a very cheap lens, although that can produce some good results. There is much less of a difference between the 50mm f1.4 and the 85mm f1.8 (to be fair you can't compare an £80 lens with a £270 lens, which is what you are doing comparing the IQ etc on the 'nifty' with the 85. The 50mm f1.4 and the 85mm f1.8 are far closer in price).

I struggled with the 50mm at first, although I have been very impressed with it recently. The 85mm I clicked with straight away and immediately got good results. However I purchased the 85mm after the 50mm so I had already had some experience shooting primes. IMO both are very good lenses - it just depends on what focal range you want. I put the 85mm on this morning but had to change to the 50mm half way round as the 85mm was too long for what I was shooting (which is the downside of primes!).
