Winter's arrival

I live in Michigan so the cold fluffy white stuff is not a stranger to us. I am wondering if there are any tips on how to expose properly for the snow.

Re: Winter's arrival

I've just had a look at the EXIF of some snow shots I took last year and I ended up using +1.3 of a stop to get any where near the correct exposure.

Re: Winter's arrival

Yep - as already said the trick for shooting in snow is to over expose your shots by +1 to +2 stops as snow often fools the cameras metering system and whilst it's white, the camera will want to make it a mid grey.

It's very much 'suck it and see' as to how much you over expose as much depends on the sky (or the light anyway) as snow is so reflective. A dull overcast day will require very different settings to a bright sunny day with blue sky.

As with any challenging exposures - it's worth considering bracketing your shots.
Kit 1

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
