A Lesson to the Young

Sat on these cliffs

overlooking Episkopi bay yesterday afternoon watching a whole flock of these little beauties screeching and reeling high above... (10 smug points if you know what birds they are)

All of a sudden two Peregrine's (an adult female and a youngster) flew out from the cliffs over the sea, the adult taking a high pitch while the youngster reeled around screeching like billy-o... all attention was then on the young Peregrine - then in a shot the female folded up and dropped like a scolded rock right into the small flock, taking a bird on the wing... she turned and then headed back inland to what I assume must be her nesting site or plucking post with the youngster in tow - Lesson over. Absolutely breath-taking to watch.

I was too slow and awe-struck to photograph the kill.... but I'm going back in a day or two - watch this space.

Re: A Lesson to the Young

Look forward to take 2

And you're soooo lucky to live in such a beautiful place - I could just go for a swim in that sea! Prob a good thing I don't live there, no work would ever get done!

Re: A Lesson to the Young

Yes Dawn - it is the Alpine Swift. A summer visitor here - and obviously a tasty feast for young raptors.

Re: A Lesson to the Young

That's one stunning beach scene Jack. I have only seen Peregrine Falcons once at a dam fish ladder locally. Their ability to dive bomb their prey is amazing. I hope you capture them on your next trip.
