Blew my D700 budget on....

A Mac Pro!

Some of you might know that my main PC died just over a week ago (hence why I haven't been so active on the sites!) and after getting a new power supply which made no difference I deduced that it was the motherboard or cpu (as I kinda dropped it - duh!) so thought I might as well get a new computer especially as I felt like moving over to os x anyway. Guess I'll be spending the weekend getting all my files and programs back on it!

Never mind (re the D700) ...I can start saving for the Nikon D4!
4 is my favourite number so I bet it will be special

Indeed, you may as well get a new computer...but until you do, just keep using that Mac doorstop you seem to have taken a couple of pictures of.

Re: Blew my D700 budget on....

lol you've obviously never used OS X in terms of usability it pees all over windows. In terms of hardware, the Mac Pros are stunning, the attention to detail and quality of components (Xeon = server rated CPUs not domestic i7s, EEC ram etc) is unmatched. The notebooks, esp the MacBook Pros are also fantastic.

Does it have downsides? Of course, it's way too propriety for my liking! But hey nothing's perfect.

What does a windows pc have going for it? It's cheap in comparison for one, and because more people use windows, there are more programs for it (just don't forget you can run windows on most modern Macs now). Downsides? Lol where do I begin

Enjoy your laptop! What did you get btw?

Re: Blew my D700 budget on....

Its a sad life when one has to go down to the level of using a MAC computer. My wife and son has had no end of problems with Apple MAC laptops, from over heating inside, burning the casing to 3 hard drive failures, and I couldn't even count the number of different versions that have come and gone through this house because they wern't suitable.
Still if you like taking an Apple computer back time and time again to the shop for repair its a trip out anyway. Don't forget to take a packed lunch because of the queue waiting to get into the store with failed computers.
Just think, you will be able to meet all those other unhappy MAC users and form some sort of club outside the Applemac store

Re: Blew my D700 budget on....

We've used Macs here at work since we started, never had any of those problems.. in fact the Macs generally out live the PC's AND hold their value more.

I have used OSX yes, it reminds me a lot of most Linux distros. Xeon processors are okay too, I run a few servers so have used Intel server processors over the years. Have to say though, the quad core processor in my main PC is superb.

PCs are not cheap in comparison to Macs, that is a bit like saying Casio cameras are cheap in comparison to Nikons, yeah, they are, but your not in the same league either

A 'good' PC probably costs the same as a Mac, if you use the correct components, as you say, quality branded memory, quality motherboard etc etc blah blah

I have not bought a 'shop built' PC since about 1991, I have always built my own, then I know whats in 'em

Downsides for PCs really are very few, I have almost no issues with any of my PCs, remember that I run 3 servers and have 7 PCs and a few laptops running, the reason why? because I know what I am doing

The notebook I got is a HP8730w, I got this because it has a fantastic screen and has a quad core processor (I capture a lot of network video traffic at work, and it hammers the processor, so having more than one is a bonus)

It's full 1080i as well so I can watch the HD feeds we produce

I have always hated Macs, mainly because the users of Macs have generally had an obnoxious air of superiority about them, which might have been justified 15 years ago, but certainly not today, when Macs are the same specs as PCs, using Intel Processors and MS part owned Operating Systems

When I want to get really frustrated and waste loads of my time doing really simple tasks, I use my Linux PC, just to remind me how great Windows really is lol

Re: Blew my D700 budget on....

You need to use it (as in live with it) for a while to fully appreciate it. Of course it's not perfect, but on the whole it's a more user friendly and intuitive operating system.

I've built all the desktop PC's I've ever owned bar one (and this Mac of course), and while I enjoyed it and always used high quality components, the finish and attention to detail would never come close to say, my Mac Pro. It's like a work of art, down to the very last screw. And I've always got the option of running windows if I want to, even on OS X via virtualisation, which it handles very well from what I've heard (you can't do that the other way round, ie run OS X on windows ).

I've never been keen on propriety-heavy systems, and would have loved to migrate to Linux, but it was just always a pain for me, drivers never worked and I just don't want to be faffing around! There is an Apple tax (another thing that annoyed me!) but you just have to accept that if you want to use their products.

Horses for courses - so far I'm enjoying my time with OS X, and can't wait for Snow Leopard!

Re: Blew my D700 budget on....

My friend just updated to Snow Leopard, so far he can't see any difference

He has only had his Mac Book for a few weeks though, and didn't use Leopard for long.
