Any good tips for product shots

Has anyone got good tips for product shots please?

I need to sell quite a few of my things on ebay, any tips on what makes a good picture from a sales point of view. I have ordered a light tent (still waiting for it) Have had some success shooting pics using the bath as a background. I need advice on what background colours to use, and what sells a product.

I would suggest lightening up the product as above in PP, it then shows detail and colour. Don't know if this is original colour but could be advertised similar to but in " actual colour"

Bazze - I'm confused... why change the colour of an item and then advertise it in text as the original colour?

AW - what sells an item is the desire by someone else to own it.

Bazza I can see that changing colour brings out more detail but it is verging on the dishonest surely.

Think photograph the article in as good a light as possible at different angles and against a background that will complement the object. Using someones hands to show or point out the relevant features would also help but make sure the nails are tidy and above all clean.

Re: Any good tips for product shots

AW- I think for Ebay a good clear shot is needed, the one you have taken shows it is a Radley bag, the colour , and the new tags on it. It is clear too, I find as a buyer on Ebay of bags I want dimensions in the description, and a clear photo, and maybe one of the interior too and always make sure the colour of the item is a true as possible.

Think white backgrounds are best, I always look at items with a clear pic, and good description. But TBH your pic is absolutely fine for Ebay, it is nice and clear.Good idea about the bath

No offence Bazza, but you have lost half the detail in the scotty dog, and turned it blue

Re: Any good tips for product shots

I was just demonstrating what can be done to improve a picture. I have noticed that all the critics havn't even bothered to try and improve on the original photos and post them on here. At least I made the attempt to show how a product can be presented better

As the original posting didn't mention what colour the bag was one can only try and present it in the best way possible.

If I had taken the photo I would have made sure the product was better lit and possibly with the bag open showing the compartments inside.

As for verging on dishonesty definatly not if the description clearly states that that is not the actual colour but black. Don't forget as I said earlier the original poster completely failed to mention the colour of the bag, therefore the picture I posted was only to show what can be achieved with better lighting.

Bazza I am going to be honest your pic did not improve AW's pic at all, it was obvious it was a black bag. I won't alter anybody's pics as I find it rude when someone does it to me TBH. I don't have much in the way of experience either, so very rarely give advice. Aw's was lit okay, and will be great once she gets her light tent.

But I do use Ebay a lot, and bags are my speciality. and AW's pic was great for Ebay, it showed the bag in detail, and the correct colour. Things like bags I want to see the true colour I'd never bid on bag that looked blue but described as black, I want to see a clear true picture.

Sorry, if you don't like it Bazza, but you blew out most of the detail, and changed the colour, so not an improvement is it

Your missing the point. When I did the alteration I did not know the bag was black, so altered the picture just to show HOW the features of the bag could be photographed.

The original picture hardly showed ANY detail at all ,and AW asked quote " what sells a product" unquote. Therefore by highlighting the bag it bought out the detail which buyers would be interested in, irrespective of the colour. That colour has absolutely nothing to do with what was asked.

Yes if I were selling a black bag then I would present it as a black bag with the details as in my altered photo

Bazza , you are missing the point, you actually lost most of the detail in your edit, you could not see the detail on the scotty dog keyring, which all Radley bags have, and as a buyer I would of just moved along to the next listing, as I want to see details like that, so I can get an idea if it is genuine.

IMO there was more detail in the original pic, yours was way too blown. But you did change the colour, so AW could not edit it like that, as it would go blue. You could clearly see it was a black bag, I am getting confused. If she used your method, she would lose details, so therefore it would not be a clear representation

I answered what I thought sold a product, especially a bag, and I don't care if the picture is not the best, so long as it is clear , and shows the colours and details truthfully, and has a good honest description. I will always favour a clean pic on a white background, when quickly scanning the listings, so for me she got it spot on.
