Copyright, and your shots, new legislation- The Digital Economy Bill

This applies to the UK, but I found the link on a Press association website.

Basically in a few weeks ,unless this new bill is rejected, any picture ,say on Flickr, forums, facebook, basically anywhere on the internet unless it has a watermark, that is embedded and one that is visible, it becomes an "orphan", an image that has no tangible traceability. The internet will become a giant stock library for commercial purposes. A small fee will be paid to an office, the government get a cut I think, but the onus will be on you to trace your picture and to claim that fee

So maybe now is the time, to start putting a big copyright watermark across the middle of your pics , stop using Flickr and other sites if you wish to protect your images. Also, it's suggested not using user names and using your real name on pics, and on forums etc,so more traceability.

The article is here,it's long but worth the read. http://www.copyrightaction.com/forum...-public?page=1

Also, in the article there is some info about new privacy laws, where it will unlawful to take street shots, reportage type images, unless you have consent, IF you are a Pro tog.

How can that be? It's clearly visible from the upload who it belongs to.

That is appauling! I would argue that if a photo is lifted from a Facebook or Flickr account then it is fairly obvious to see who it belongs to! Even if they do use an alias.

I am another that hopes it gets rejected

The problem with images arises when other people 'lift' them, then either go on to repost them as their own or 'sell' them to stock libraries. But at the end of the day any commercial outlet using them should make sure they buy from respected sources only!!

That article hints it is being pushed through because Rupert Murdoch and his cronies wants it!!

Re: Copyright, and your shots, new legislation- The Digital Economy Bill

This is truly appalling, and the consequences of this bill, will change the copyright laws in the uk , and not for the better

It will be basically legal for someone to take a pic off Yo! then say it is an "orphan" and pay a small fee, which the government get a cut of,and use for commercial purposes, and you may never know, and if you do find out ,and say it's mine, you get a few pennies .

I already sell still life's,stock and fine art stuff through stock libraries, and don't publish them anywhere else, to try and stop my images, getting used without my knowledge. Guess this will affect stock libraries too, as now the whole internet will be a giant stock library Will this affect photography websites, forums,Flickr etc???

Also worrying, is the fact that it will become illegal to take shots of members of the public without consent if you are a Pro, so reporters, street photographers, are all going to be affected.

Another great way to crush dissent - reporters won't be able to cover demonstrations or stuff like that!! bad enough that they can't photograph police as it is!!

It's crazy, and sadly, I think the new bill will be passed

This is quite interesting,it's about how you can try and protect your images http://audioboo.fm/boos/98807-digita...ography-redeye
