Azz, I looked at this crop first (great minds etc...) but also liked the more panoramic crop, maybe we'll get some others opinions.

I think I like the second crop first. Your eye is more drawn to the bird so it tells more of a story.

The second crop is more the normal format whereas the first breaks a few 'rules', maybe that's why I like it.
