p.s what did you use the cd for ?
Thanks clairlou.I used the cd to try get more colours into the bowl/water, by using the light from the torch shining off the cd and reflecting the rainbow colors back into the water

Is the 50mm the 50 1.8 or 1.4?
Thanks Greyhawk. It's the 1.8 mk II. The trick is to focus on something where you expect the drip to fall (not easy) i.e, placing an object over the centre of the bowl then focussing off that. It was made more difficult because I used the 2 sec timer rather than just pressing the shutter button, but did not want to risk blurry shots even although the camera was on a tripod.

I had a remote control for the 400d and it was great but I don't think Canon have made one for the 40d except for the wired ones.

Yes, it is compatible but costs around £250 . The 40d does not have an infra red reciever built into it like the XX0d series has. This lc-5 remote comes with a 15inch reciever cable which plugs into the 40d and triggered from the rc transmitter handset.
Rather expensive for what it is, but it does have a range of 330ft.
