Will Nikon match Canon ?

As Canon have bought out the 7D camera with 18 meg pixels, Nikon have a huge gap in their line up. You either have the choice of 12 meg or 24 meg pixel cameras only, with a tremendous price difference between them. I am thinking along the lines of Nikon matching Canon with an 18 meg pixel camera and calling it the D400 or D500 with possibly movie. They could go with a D700s but would still be only 12 meg pix.

Do you think Nikon will produce one?

Re: Will Nikon match Canon ?

I would think a D400 is next on the cards

However, mega pixels don't sell cameras in the prosumer market, or least that's what I would have thought - esp as the D700 is still so popular.

Re: Will Nikon match Canon ?

if you check out Nikon rumors, you'll see that the next camera expected in the lineup has a mid range megapixelage like the 7D. But also loss of ISO ability and things like that. Personally, I'm holding out for Nikon to bring out a D700x - 18-24 megapixels, smaller than a D3x, perhaps even with the same buffer. Nikon should just give up on putting video in their cameras - Canon completely owns that market, and rightly so; they've been putting video cameras out there since very very early on. They know how to have the video compressed, stored, etc. Nikon is relying on the lossy, huge motion jpeg format.
That's not of course to say that I won't buy a D700s if it comes out with more megapixelage and looks to be better for shooting wildlife than a D300. I would quite like to try out a video feature, but if I get it it will only be because it is part of the package: the rest of the features need to make the addition of video a "free" benefit as far as my photography is concerned.
Look forward to the next few months, and keep checking Nikon Rumors - Something is in the works, and we can only hope that Nikon will elect to blow us all away.
