Re: 'Welding Glass' filter Photography

Well I glued my 10 grade glass to a 77mm adapter ring.

Then sold my 77mm diameter Sigma 10-20 before I even tried the welding glass out.

It's waiting for my 17-40 lens now lol

Re: 'Welding Glass' filter Photography

I now have the B&W ND filter that most people are after but tried the welding glass idea a year or more back. Mine came out with a distinctly greenish cast. TBH I didn't play around too much to see if I could improve on the results, or easily clear the cast in PP, but I'm sure with the right information you could save money. My filter was about £65 secondhand, new it is about £85, and the welding glass idea is about £2-3! (not sure what that is in all the currencies for you overseas members! .

I think some of the self made stuff is ok, but I was doing some event photography a week or two back and I was using a Gary Fong Lightsphere. i would have been embarressed to have had a plastic cup or yoghurt pot to achieve the same with a number of VIP's there! There are even people making ring flashes/beauty dishes etc. Great for home shoots and to try the effect.

Re: 'Welding Glass' filter Photography

Your first shot should be green Stu - you then have to use your green shot to set your white balance which should correct this. It will then giveyou pink results without the welding glass till you set your WB back again.

Re: 'Welding Glass' filter Photography

Thanks Phil, sure you are correct, I borrowed the home made one and it looked like something off Blue Peter so I didn't give it the attention it probably deserved. Funnily enough I just bought a white balance disc to try and get it a little more accurate (not much use with a strong ND filter though!)
