Heeeellpp - SD card problem :-(

Yesterday I transfered everything off a 2GB SD card, [ brand, Staples ].
I then used the card today, took some of the best pics ever, [ for me anyway ], and video clips, [ its a Kodak Easyshare C623 camera ].

Playback was fine on the camera, took some stills from vid clips on the camera, those were also fine.
Then I put the card in my Reader to upload to PC - and nothing - so I put the card back in the camera but when trying to see the pics it came up saying `reformat card`.
So, I ignored that, [ didn`t reformat ], took the card out, put it back in Reader, and tried downloading a recovery program. The one I have running now is this one, but it has`nt found a single image yet

http://www.cardrecovery.com/

I also downloaded this one

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/smartrecovery.html

but it does`nt want to run properly

Can anyone recommend other programs to try as I desperately don`t want to lose the pics and vids

My PC is stoopid crappy ME by the way, I know not all possible data retrievers will be compatible

Please help

Re: Heeeellpp - SD card problem :-(

Don't know about SD cards from that particular company ,but Sandisk CF cards come with a recovery discs and presumably so would the SD cards.
The only way I know to find out if you have any data on the card is by putting the card into the reader then checking the properties.

Put card into reader- open folder using windows explorer- right mouse click on folder- go to properties and read what the folder contains. That is the only way you can check your SD card. it should show how many how many files are on the card.

Have you tried uploading direct from the camera to computer without using card reader?

The reader is`nt registering that the card is present at all, but it does recognise my other cards so it does seem to be a problem specific to this one but I don`t understand how it can be perfectly fine one moment then something happen to it between going from the camera to the reader, literally moments after looking at the pics on the camera viewscreen

When I put the card back in the camera it comes up saying Memory Card Needs Formatting` so the camera is`nt reading it now at all, I just don`t understand it
I`m wondering if the recovery program did`nt help because the reader is`nt acknowledging the card at all ?

I really need these pics, I`ll never be able to retake them, its gutting

Re: Heeeellpp - SD card problem :-(

All I can suggest is you take the card to a professional camera shop and see if they can recover the files on the card. I wouldn't even try any further incase of causing more problems. You might even find a small computer shop could extract the file to disc for you, but don't go to a well known computer store.
Infact I think I would try a computer expert shop first mainly due to having a hard drive completely fail on me and my shop I use managed to save some business files that were invaluable to me.

Re: Heeeellpp - SD card problem :-(

Hi Azz, good to be here, just wish it was to be able to post pics instead of being completely hacked off if the ones I took today are lost - they are important because they are for a magazine article which my dogs are being featured in and the deadline is close, I won`t get the chance to try to reproduce the pics as the other dogs in them won`t be available until next week

I`ve looked on the SanDisk site but nothing helpful there unless I were to buy a piece of software that`s not guarantee`d to work and would probably take weeks to arrive even if I could afford it

I`ll see if I can get hold of anywhere tomorrow who might be able to help, I`ll avoid `the` well known computer store, I tend not to go there if I can help it and even then its only to get paper for the printer if I run out in an emergency while that shop is still open

Re: Heeeellpp - SD card problem :-(

Is there a yellow slide/switch type thing on the card? I accidently locked one of my nikon SD cards and could not do anything with it until I unlocked the card.

Re: Heeeellpp - SD card problem :-(

Have you tried downloading the sd card straight on to computer insead of the reader? Does it work ? That way you can tell if it the card or the reader.

I`ll go through them all Azz, fanx, but I don`t hold out much hope as the card is`nt being recognised as present by the reader, its as though its not thre are all so all the recovery things I`ve tried so far have not done anything as the PC keeps telling me to insert the card into the drive when its already in there. The Reader does light up with the card in, its just not registering it.

Hi Carole, yep all my cards are lockable so I made sure that was`nt the problem

Its definitely not the reader, I tried other cards in it and they are all showing up correctly, its just this one, [ the important one typically ].
When I put the card back in the camera, the camera refused to do anything other than state that the card needs reformatting, and I`m not doing that. Unfortunately due to my PCs operating system, [ crappy ME ], the software for connecting the camera direct to PC does`nt work, it needs XP and above, though saying that my laptop is XP and the software kept coming up saying it could`nt install so I can`t even try anything that way, not that it would work anyway as the camera refuses to read the card properly anyway

I was going to go out today to see if I could get a place to have a look but because of the rain my van can`t go anywhere, [ very muddy where I have to park, so I can`t even try that right now

I did get an email from a techie bloke re one of the recovery programs I tried and they do have facility to send cards off to them to recover data and put it on CD which I might end up doing. That will be too late for the magazine the pics were for but I`d have a chance of having the pics for myself if they can do it so that would be huge consolation at least
