Best shutter speed for running dog...

I was trying to get some play shots yesterday and couldn't seem to get any good ones...should I have the focus on multi or centered?
What kind of shutter speed/f. would you use for a regular running dog...or maybe my panning just sucks...
These are a couple of examples from yesterday...

4 - 1/100, 400, 4.5

2 - 1/100, 400, 4.6

3 - 1/100, 400, 4.5

1 - 1/160, 400, 4.6

Help! I have another group walk on Sunday and want to get some better shots

Re: Best shutter speed for running dog...

If you right click on your image on the PC and look at properties and choose the details tab it will provide you with your camera settings for that picture.

Can I have
ISO
Shutter Speed
F-Stop

Re: Best shutter speed for running dog...

Generally speaking though, I personally wouldn't go any less than 1/125 to freeze motion. And In honesty, I find that too slow and tend to opt for 1/250+ for mine. But I use a very shallow DoF (2.8) so any motion is exaggerated and I need to it nail the focus.

Heres two from this winter with Atlas.

f2.8 1/400

f2.8 1/500

Re: Best shutter speed for running dog...

Gorgeous! Malamute?
My shutter speed goes quite high, but my maximum arpeture at wide angle is 3.3...and they come out dark, am I better off going for exposure compensation or iso number higher?
Also, is it better to stay zoomed out? I found it was a bit worse when I zoomed in, and darker too...that sound about right?
I have a panasonic lumz tz8 by the way if that helps

Re: Best shutter speed for running dog...

Aperture is dependent on the lens. 3.2 is more than adequate for shooting in normal light levels. I choose wider as Its my shooting style. I love narrow Dof.

To get the correct exposure, you need to understand the relationship between Shutter speed and Aperture, and the balancing the two for the correct exposure. Zooming shouldn't have an effect on the exposure?...Unless, im guessing that it's not a constant aperture zoom. It gets slower as you zoom in?

Exposure compensation is only needed in high contrast situations. Such as snow or backlit situations. I would suggest setting you shutter speed first. Start at 1/250, followed by an ISO of 400, and open your aperture to around 5.6, as this will give you room to focus and give a nice shallow DoF. If the exposures to bright, knock down the ISO and/or up the shutter speed. If its too dark, up the ISO and widen the aperture.

Re: Best shutter speed for running dog...

Good tips from DC

If your camera can handle it, up the ISO too - that will help in low/er light conditions.

Re: Best shutter speed for running dog...

Some good advice there.

Looking at your camera.....

http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_G...trackInfo=true

......another thing worth getting right is the IS.

Optical Image Stabilizer (Off / Auto / Mode1 / Mode2)

This can have quite an effect on panning or moving objects. If it's like some of my lenses then your best checking the book to see which mode is right for your shot.
