Adobe Elements 8 WARNING

Warning about Photoshop Elements 8, this product is only licenced for 2 computers if purchased as a retail product. There is absolutely NO indication on the box about this.

Elements 7 is completely different and has no such limitation but can't be used with the new windows 7 version.

My suggestion is to get the Elements 7 version before they sell out.

Ugh - I hate programs that do this! It should be illegal. Spore was the same. I refused to buy a copy because of it - and I certainly wouldn't buy any photoshop product with this issue.

So if you were to sell an image to a company for use on their website would it be OK for them to use it on any website or lend it to someone else to use on their website?

I do think you would be justifiably put out if they were to do so.

How many computers do you think it acceptable to use software on. Five, ten, all your friends, why not the whole neighbourhood? In fact Adobe need only sell one copy and then let everyone else copy it on to their computers.

Sorry, despite hating Adobe's pricing policy, I think they are correct in allowing the use of their software on two machines.

It doesn't work quite like that though... that means if you buy a copy, and install it on your home computer, if you need to wipe it for any reason, you're a 'use' down... so then it happens again, and you've lost the programme. I think it's wrong, and I will only buy a disk where I *own* a copy of the programme, not just 'borrow' a copy!! If I pay for the programme, I own it, and should be allowed to use it on as many machines as I wish to. I don't think it's right to then lend it out to people, of course not, but you're not buying the software here, just buying the rights to two installs - which is wrong.

For example, I have a game here, Dogz - that I have had since I was 13! (and have bought all the upgrades too). I have installed it on every PC I've had since I got it... and I will continue to do so for as long as I'm able - that is how software should be.

ETA - some companies that use this techinque *Spore specifically, in my experience* install (illegally IIRC) onto your PC a programme called 'Securom' which is what stops you from installing it more than once. They don't tell you they'll do this and it installs into your registry making removal very awkward.

I agree Adobes product are expensive, but they do make awesome software.

Yes I think if I pay £80 for a program I can use it wherever I like! It was me that bought it! Elements 7 can be used on however many, I only bought 8 because windows 7 isnt compatible, and Adobe wont do the necessary to accommodate users.

There was absolutely NOTHING on the box that states limited use. It does say refer to T&C, so what should I of done? Gone back home, (with Adobe assuming I have net access) read them, then went back to the shop and bought it, STILL not knowing how many computers it was suitable for? Because there was no way of telling! Adobe said take it back and ask for a copy for 4 computers! Yeah ok, like PC World would of said " of course you can, that copy is useless now, have another for 4 computers!" Not forgetting THEY couldnt know how many it was licensed for either, Adobe said there was nothing on the packaging to say so!

Damn rip off!

If one un-installs the software from one of the 2 computers it is installed on it is a simple phone call or e-mail to Adobe to register it to another computer.

It is not written in stone that once it is installed on certain computer then it cannot be moved to another computer but at any one time one can only have it installed on two computers.

I just can't believe that people think it right that once they have bought a piece of software then they should be allowed to install it on countless numbers of computers.

Well I find that very strange, because the last edition (elements 7) does! As many as you like, the only reason they released 8 is for it to accommodate windows 7! £80 for a stuff up most other companies have rectified via an upgrade on their sites.

You seem to be missing the point Steve. I have NO problem with buying ANYTHING that is clearly marked. If it said for 2 computers that would of been fine, super!! It doesnt! Adobe said swap it for one that does 4 computers, how? (apart from being a stupid suggestion) They acknowledge that there is NOTHING on the packaging to tell you how many its for! See? I dont have issue with their license or any other "terms" they may have, Id just like to be aware of what Im buying!

I appreciate what you are saying Dawn and I agree that if it is not made clear that it is only usable on 2 computers then you have cause to be upset.
