Bad news, good news, bad news, good...

I'd had my A200 since 2009. It was an old friend,a camera I grabbed when I wanted to get pictures that my compact pocket-able cameras weren't c apable of taking. It had the kit lens, a Chinese made 18-70SAL, and just worked. I recently supplemented the camera bag with a Tamron 70-300 as I have done a bit of promo work for musical comedians, taking on-stage shots.

So, two weeks ago I grabbed the camera bag at silly o'clock and headed for the city to get some shots of the Olympic flame. I got a few good ones, including this, my current favourite.

No sooner had I taken that than the kit lens started making the most horrendous coffee-grinder noises

I was mortified. I'd just ordered a couple of Yuong Nuo flash guns, new batteries, reflectors and a kit bag, as I'd intended to rekindle my love of photography as a real hobby again.

There's a standard starting charge of £120 for a Sony repair. I wasn't happy. And then by co-incidence discovered that I had bought a 5 year warranty on the camera and lens...

On Tuesday it went off for repair. On Thursday I got a phonecall. The camera was a write-off. I questioned that, as I knew it was only the lens at fault. This was apparently true. Right up to the point the technician dropped it on the floor...

I was given a voucher number and told that if I went to PCWorld I could get a replacement. I explained in turn that the A200 was old, no longer made. The young lady said I could get any make of equivalent spec. I explained that it had to be Sony, as that was what all my kit was for. She said she'd adjust the voucher value so I wouldn't be inconvenienced...

She did. The voucher value was £970... so I now have a nice Sony A57, two kit lenses and another 5 year warranty.

I'd say that was a result

Gotta be honest, I'm not unhappy with him. Although of course I now have to relearn the camera. Why do manufacturers move the flippin' switches when they were perfectly good where they were? I keep trying to turn in on and off with the menu button

And I'm still kinda expecting PCWorld to tell me they've boobed and they want it all back and it should have been 97 quid...

Nice one, at least they were decent enough to give you sufficient money to get another camera.
I had to fight Jessops to return £850 on a camcorder I cancelled BEFORE it was sent (I was quoted 28 days delivery after order placed) yet Jessops still tried to send it. It took another 6 weeks together with help from the credit card company before they would give a refund.
