Can you believe your eyes in the digital world?

Spotted this article on the BBC, thought you might be interested, there's a video at the link too - with a couple of tips in there.

Quote:
Whether it's Obama on the beach or the impossibly flawless skin of this month's glossy cover girl, any picture can now be digitally altered to tell an entirely different story. In the age of the airbrush, can we ever really believe our eyes?

One man who can is Professor Hany Farid, a computer scientist and digital forensics expert who is a professional spotter of faked images - although he does not like the term.

"Fakery is a loaded word - I prefer alteration or manipulation," he said. "It's not always intended to be malicious."

His website features a large gallery of published images that aren't quite what they seem.

The oldest has been around for an astonishing 150 years - a portrait of Abraham Lincoln dated 1860 that is in fact Mr Lincoln's head on the body of another.

"It has happened throughout history," said Prof Farid. "The compositing of two people together is common - we see this over and over."

Re: Can you believe your eyes in the digital world?

Well this topic could potentially open the can of proverbial can of worms could it not, Well anyway here is my thoughts.

Going back to my early days of dating back in the day or the lack of due to the fact i was never taken buy girls with loads of makeup as to me it did not show them in thier true light as if they wanted to hide from something. I quess in a way the image manipulation is like an extension of this.

While on holliday a few years back i remember meeting Sandra Bullock walking on a beach and she had been made up for a photo shoot but they still would airbrush the pictures i was told. The following day on another part of the beach i met Sandra and her then husband Jesse James and this time Sandra was without make up her personality was that of a down to earth fun loving person but with the make up her personality changed to that of what others wanted to see.

I think what i am trying to say is that i do not agree with so called manipulation as i feel as if i have been short changed from meeting the real or seeing the real person even those used for front covers.
I also think that it sends the wrong message to the younger people out their as we so often hear in the news. No one, not one person in the world is perfect as we all have one thing or another that makes us different from the next person and that is what makes us unique from one another. Using manipulation takes the uniqueness away from a person and labels them perfect. As we are all aware the manipulation is not just about the face but it can be used on the whole person changing thier shape size and so on.

I am not the best looking guy about and it the past i have broken my back and have trouble with my knees and a couple of other scars from opperations but i would not be happy to have photographic manipulation used on me as i want to be seen for who i am.

This is just my point of view and i know that others will disagree with what i think and again that is what makes us unique from each other.
