Use your own name, or a business name?

Just thinking out loud at the moment BUT,

Is it better to use your own name for your photography, or develop a business name as your brand?

So, there is no link between where you are today, and want to go in the future with your photography, and your past attempts

Re: Use your own name, or a business name?

You're no blooming help

Well, I have name on most of my pics on the internet, as I got fed up with some going for a walk on Flickr. But, hopefully I have progressed since a lot of them where taken, plus at the moment, all the shots I post, are my personal stuff.

I'm confused, and confuddled xx

Re: Use your own name, or a business name?

Personally, if I ever go into business I'll be starting fresh with a new name so that my old work can't be connected to it.
I have a boring sounding name though so I'd be happy to get something more creative.

This is my way of thinking, too.

Completely new start, from older work.

But finding the name, that is right, is easier said than done

That's what I was thinking.

Philip Jerrard-Dinn

I guess you could 're-brand' with a new name if you feel your new stuff is of a higher standard.

Keep your old 'real' name for older shots or new pics which you feel don't cut the mustard if you feel they would detract from your new brand as you move forward.

Businesses do it all the time if you think about it.....Epiphone guitars are still produced by Gibson and sold mainstream for half the price without lowering the status of Gibson. Fender do the same with Squire. BSH (Bosch & Siemans) are the same for white goods.

Re: Use your own name, or a business name?

Always keep anything to do with business away from anything personal. If not you could find that the business part can come into conflct with your personal life.

Its hard to seperate the two until you get used to it, but if you don't then your personal time will have clients trying to interrupt the time needed for family etc.

There is nothing wrong in being friendly on a business basis with clients, but that is what it has to be, keep the two seperate . We should know as quite often clients want to see us at the most inconvenient time, which is why we have very strict hours of business.
So best to have a completely different business name from your own.
