Re: Landscape photography - tips please!

Hi again folks, off line due to a power cut, got up this morning to everything flashing, not not Mr Snaps but the cooker etc.

Yes, had glanced at the cost of filters in general and polariser in particular, still there is no point is paying a fortune for a lens and placing a lump of doggy glass or acrylic in front of it.

May get some vouchers for the purchases I have made of late so I should perhaps be able to use them to buy Hoya, since Hoya and Pentax are one and the same now, not sure how good they are, Hoya that is, but I will ask around. That leaves me with the problem of do I go square or round.

Do you think it may be an idea for someone to take the tips from this thread and place the collection into the Basics section where it can help any wishing to know about this form of photography, perhaps it should be called the Learning Zone or something as the help on here is not entirely 'basic'

Re: Landscape photography - tips please!

Hoya, especially the more expensive premium ones are excellent. If I had not invested so heavily into the Lee filter system I would certainly use the Hoya filters.

Re: Landscape photography - tips please!

As to whether to invest in screw in round or the square/oblong filter systems is all down to personal preference. If your lenses all have the same diameter front element then screw in can be cost effective but if you have to buy separate filters for different size lens threads it can be expensive. Step up/down rings are not a favourite of mine as I have spent too much time trying to get the filter and ring apart when they stick.

Personally I love the square filter systems.

Re: Landscape photography - tips please!

Think if I want graduated filters Steve I am going to have to go with square, because they are limited in availability on the screw in type.

Have to say the square are easy to use and better to carry but I like the neatness of the round. My lens are all different sizes and to fit them all with polariser would cost more than the body I have just bought.

Think I should stop buying the odd filter, decide on a system and stick to it, in the long run it will be more economic. Had heard that Lee are bringing out a more economic version, suppose it depends on where and with what they have made the savings.

First serious try at Landscape

Re: Landscape photography - tips please!

Took the new Lens out this evening to see if I could take something that you good people may help me with, bear in mind that I have no filters at the moment, a handicap particularly when you add it to the fact that I don't know what I am doing with a lens this wide in my hand.

Taken in Jpeg, Pentax K20 f10 @ 24mm, Pentax 12-24mm

1/ this is straight from the camera, thought it may be easier to see where I went wrong.

2/ this has had the normal sort of PP that I would do to any shot for printing or internet - tidy up, color, burn, sharpen and frame

3/ this a mono version of the shot because it seems that many I study are in mono and this makes it easier to assess my own work. (have to say it looked nice in a sepia version)

Now I have put them through the process of being uploaded I can see the one I have PP is a bit thin still never mind you can still see what I was aiming at.

Re: Landscape photography - tips please!

Me back with another question.

Talking Lee, when would you go from the standard adaptor rings to the wide angle and, if you buy them, a favourite supplier as mine does not do them.

Re: Landscape photography - tips please!

Which bit in particular are you looking for help with Snapper?

The best advice I could give about landscape photography is that one of the key (and most difficult) things is getting a really nice scene (that fits the frame).

We have some beautiful countryside here, but there's nothing really that 'stands out' enough to make a special photo. I posted my frustration about it here. I think you have to be prepared to travel (like some of our best landscape togs here do)

Re: Landscape photography - tips please!

I am sure you are right Azz, perhaps I should have posted these on the other Landscape thread I have running where I have been getting help with getting used to my new wide end zooms having never tackled landscape in earnest before. Link here, sorry don't know how to do a tidy link.

http://http://www.yophotographer.com...8592#post78592 you may think it better moved.

These were only taken just outside my front door so not that exciting but shots of the area will form part of a pictorial view of the village I am working on. So they are to be viewed as a shot of a road in a village, picturesque does not really come into it but they must be either pleasant to view or interesting.
