Lens Hoods

When would you use a lens hood. All the time, only when it's sunny, not indoors, if you are on full zoom etc?

I have a hood for the Canon EF-S 55-250mm.

When are the correct times to use a hood?

Not much you can say after that helpful article... I almost always use one.

Same here, always except for one situation.

When using my 100mm Macro for close up work the lens hood throws the subject into shadow so I remove it. That is the only time any of my lens are hoodless.

They are all hoodies

Actually worth mentioning then that some hoods (and some lenses) cast shadows particularly if using the pop up flash on a camera...

Nearly always use lens hoods on my shorter / wider angled lenses to reduce the chance of flare. The only time I don't is if I'm using square ND Graduated filters as the hoods obviously can't be attached or if I'm using the flash as the wider ones can cast shadows when shooting close subjects.

With longer lenses I'll hold my hands up and say that I don't always use the hood although if I'm shooting in the rain or I'm anywhere near the sea or beach for example I'll use it for protective purposes.

Plus I bet there are lots of people that want to know the answer to this but would feel a silly asking. I can do that for them

I would have posted my own personal choices last night, but was stuck on useless laptop while we yet again fix useless desktop () - so can't type very well.

I personally tend to use it for all but macro work. There are some rarer occasions when I don't use it on the long lens - but to be honest, I pretty much always do. Ooh - I don't use one on the 50mm either. It has its glass pretty far back anyway, so it's like having a lens hood

Yes - the one for the 105mm casts really daft shadows on anything small and close, especially if flash is used.
