Starter kit for lighting

Think I would like to look into lighting, I have none left that work so need to start from scratch. Can I have suggestions please for lights and or reflectors & diffusers for a beginners kit.

Something that will help a novice to understand it's use without breaking the bank.

Re: Starter kit for lighting

Are you asking about studio lighting or flashgun equipment?

LOL, not sure Bazza, went to take something on the chest near the window and I had a nasty shadow, so I tried the flash and that was horrid as it made the whole thing flat. So dragged out the old video floods pointed one of them at the ceiling and plugged it in, now in the 20 seconds before it blew I think I had what I wanted.

So I don't know what I want really, something to fill in so I don't need to use a flash, may be a flash that is more adaptable than the one on the camera, something that can be directed away from the subject, may be I need a reflector to utilise the natural light.

Sorry guess what I need is suggestions for a beginner who finds the available light is not enough when they don't want to turn up the ISO or use the flash.

Am I making sense or asking the impossible. Please feel free to tell me I am not making sense because I don’t want to buy equipment I don’t need on the other hand I find it frustrating when I can’t get what I want. Think I am suffering from the long wet summer.

Re: Starter kit for lighting

Interesting thread as I have no lights, reflectors etc, and find it all a bit confusing TBH. I am interested in what others suggest. Good thread Snapper.

Re: Starter kit for lighting

Have a look on abay and it explains itself.

It is a white tent and usually 3 or 4 different backgrounds.

Place your item on the background and the light will be even all the way around and snap away snapper.

Re: Starter kit for lighting

Had a look at the light tent and it seems a useful bit of kit, easy to find storage for and easy to transport. So next question, what do you use as a light sorce, and does the light tent defuse the light so you only need one lamp or would you need at least two?

Re: Starter kit for lighting

Ah now that is the million dollar question !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I always use window light or take the tent outside for natural light.

NATURAL light is the king of lights.
