I don't know what to do... it's almost half the price of the D300 (D300 = £900, 40D = £500!) If nikon were offering £100 cash back that would be something...

There's no doubting I'd prefer the D300 Azz especially the metering but as you know I'd decided not to spend any more than £700 so I didn't allow my little devil to consider the D300.
I was deliberating over the D200 as I liked the camera but once I'd had a play with the 40d I was more than happy with the feel & functionality it offered - and the price was a bonus.

Can't believe Azz, champion of the Nikons is contemplating a Canon
(Just messing)Azz, I really know nothing about cameras yet, but,several people on here have the 40D and love it! and it is a lot cheaper than the D300!
Buy it Azz, don't think, just buy!

Phil - did any software come with the 40D? Anything that allows you to process RAW files for example?
I have adobe lightroom, but I find that Nikons own picture perfect software actually works better with the nikon raw files :-/
I really wish the D300 was cheaper, it's hard to justify paying almost double for it (well, not if you had the money to spend!). I think Canon made a good move by recognising the 40D couldn't really compete on features... but it can on price, so lowered it to almost half!

I think the summer will see a nice drop in price, and I'm thinking that if I bought the 40D I might want to upgrade sooner than if I bought the D300 :-/ Really dunno what to do - but its HARD to ignore a £400 price difference
