Hi Flight,
I start a part time college course next month, I also think it best you talk to your lecturer
My syllabus starts with the basics, film, darkroom, onto digital, and then digital post processing. Finally, ending with developing a portfolio .
I was told to buy a DSLR, which I already had, and they would supply a 35mm film body, if I didn't have one, but I found my Grandads Zenit in the loft, which I am starting to use for Black and White Photography, and just bought myself an immmaculate Canon EOS100, and a lens, very reasonably. I bought a 35mm camera as I want to practise whenever I get the time. But , I love film so if you are not really interested, just put more towards your DSLR.
Do go and have a chat at college though, so you don't get something you aren't going to need.

I was choosing between that and a canon, Im all pretty new to this so I cant remember the model just that it had 12 megapixels compered to the nikons 10. I went for the Nikon in the end just because it felt so much nicer, it felt more compact and like it was going to last unlike the canon, Im no expert or anything (yet
)
