Sorry...yet another question! (re flickr)

It's about Flickr....I love Flickr, for editing my photos, I just really like some of the things you can do (though I'm not a Pro-account user!). I was going to upgrade to thier Pro-account, but something put me off...Everytime I tried to share/print my photos, after editing them in Flickr, they had been compressed and resized really tiny. This isn't so bad for sharing, as you can enlarge pictures on Flickr, but the printing was really bad, it was all pixelated!

Can anyone tell me please if they use Flickr and do not find this problem. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, or is it because I'm not a Pro-account user? I think that with a Pro-account, you don't have an upload limit, so maybe they compress your photos less, as they don't need to fit so many in within the allocated amount allowed each month.

Please help, I really would love to use Flickr for my editing, but don't want my photos to be changed size wise permanantly, just to fit them on to the site.

Thanks!

Re: Sorry...yet another question! (re flickr)

I have a pro account and dont have those problems. Can't recall whether I had those problems before going pro though.

When you upload to Flickr it uploads the full image.

When you look through all your images in Flickr you see a resized version but when you press the 'all sizes' button you get an option to see your pic in about 6 different sizes from a tiny little avatar size right up to the full original size.

When posting on the web I would select a middle size version, emailing I might select a smaller version or downloading to get printed I'd select the full biggest size.

Hope that makes sense.

Re: Sorry...yet another question! (re flickr)

I am with Phil on this - I have a Flickr pro account and photobucket account and use both. I much prefer the Flickr account and if I save them at full size, then that's one of my options in the 'all sizes' Phil describes. I have also printed directly from flickr with no problem.

I tend to use photobucket for jpegs and cropped or lower quality images.

Re: Sorry...yet another question! (re flickr)

I use Flickr and have a Pro account.

I edit and resize all my images before uploading to flickr so the largest image on my Flickr account would be around 1000 px on the longest side.

My use of Flickr is to have a place to post to forums or for people/customers to view. If they like what they see then they can order a full size image or print by quoting the filename of the image.

I never upload full res images to flickr. Even with my relatively small images on Flickr I have found some being used on websites without my permission. A German site had six of my images on their site. We came to an understanding and as it was a non-profit making site, I did not charge for them. They have since come back and asked if they can use images and I now get a credit for the images .

sorry to go off topic slightly... Steve, how did you find out your images were being used on another site?

Hi Jack

I do a search on google images every so often on my name, dog's names and breed etc.

Take 30 minutes or so just to scan through the results and it is surprising where some of the clumber's images show up.

Steve

PS: It's interesting to see where you are in the google rankings. When I put my name in I am at the very top of the first page.

I echo what Steve says I never upload an image too large and high res, as I have had my images pinched too. I use technorati to check if mine have been used on the web, I even found one of my pics on a Russian ,er, dodgy siteit was a self portrait I did, never shared on here, but it was pinched off my photostream lesson learnt I have had lighthouse pics used on an American website, though they did pay me, after I kicked up stink . Some flower pics , and also some have turned up in other peoples blogs

Flickr is a place for me to keep pics to upload here, or just share. Sorry never used it for editing either.

Meant to say I have a Pro account too.Never tried to print from the images on my account, as they are not the full sized version, so I didn't really help much. xxx
