Track day photography

Hey guys... not sure where to put this....

James is doing another track day on the bike, just wondering what your Tips/Tricks would be to get a great action shot?? I've already done some track day pictures at Brands Hatch, but took me ages to get settled into it until i starte dto get some good shots.

Also any effects i should try, we are there all day so have lads of opertunities to try different effects.

Cheers

Sammy

Re: Track day photography

Try some panning shots Sam.

Use a shutter speed between 1/8sec and 1/125sec depending on the subject's speed and distance.
Make sure you press the shutter when the subject reaches a mid point along your panning track to ensure it's in the best position and try to follow without moving up or down to prevent subject blur.

This tecnique allows the main subject to stay in focus while everything else is blurred in the direction you pan. It looks great and gives a wonderful feel of speed

Re: Track day photography

I'll let the 400d owners give you the tips on this one!

Apart from making sure the auto-focus is set to moving objects

Look forward to the pics!

Re: Track day photography

oooh Azz just reminded me - you need manual focus for panning as the cam wont be able to find the right focus point on its own. Either use infinity focus (manual focus into the distance) with a large aperture or focus midway on the tracks.

Re: Track day photography

If I was nearer I would have loved to tag along! Good practice

I haven't tried the moving objects auto-focus yet - but guess you are right K!
