Sigma 70-300mm - New lens new lens new lens!

Hubby has just come home with a new lens for me as an anniversary present.
Puts the teeny little willow tree I bought him to shame!

It is a Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG macro
He bought it because it was the only lens in Comet that fitted my camera!
Could someone explain to me what kind of lens it is, is it any good (I can take it back if its useless) and what do I use it for?

Thanks!

It will be good for wildlife - as you now have a top end of 300mm

I don't have any experience of that lens, but do know that you could have probably got a better deal on the web - comet are not the cheapest when it comes to camera gear

I've also moved this thread to the canon DSLR section

If it's the APO version then you've got yourself a very capable macro zoom lens - you can tell by the presence or absence of a red ring around the outside of the front rotating ring on the lens barrel. (The APO version has a red ring).

Stick some extenders under the end of it and you will have an impressive tool for macro work too.

I had one of these lens (the APO) version and rarely took it off my Canon.

Re: Sigma 70-300mm - New lens new lens new lens!

its a medium to long range lens which is about the average for that use. Being f4.5-5.6mm you may need to increase the ISO settings on your camera in dull light to counter balance the amount of light the lens allows onto the sensor. A true Macro will have a ratio of1:1. This Sigma has a ratio of 1:2 which means that lens will produce a smaller image. As JR says extension tubes may help in this dept.

You ask what you can use it for? well you could use it for rolling pastry with or a club to knock 7 bells out of something, but I would use it when I wanted to get a closer photo than I can walk up to. I have a 70-300mm Nikon version which is usually on my camera.

One thing to be aware of is it doesn't have OS (optical stablisation) so when using it I would suggest a support of some type- bean bag- monopod-tripod. Just a tip.

I have this lens and love it.

As said by Baz you will need something to steady it at times when using the longer length.

ENJOY!!!

Marvellous!
Not too bad for a spontaneous buy then!
We'll be off to see the seals when we are on our camping trip so I guess it will be good for that.
