Flash for D80 portrait work

Hi guys,

I've been toying with the idea of getting for a flash for a while now, and would like the sb600 for my Nikon D80.

Just wondered if anyone knows of a cheaper equivalent that would be half decent? I've had a glance at some jessops and Sigma flashes, bt dont know much about them, or flashes in general to be honest.

I've been asked if I can sort out a glamour portfolio for a couple of people, as they're not paying, i'd rather just get a flash that would do a good enough job, as i'm not likely to make a living from this... and chances are i'd only use the flash once in a blue moon.

Avoid Jessops own brand! Iv gone through 3 since Novemeber and now they are refusing to replace!

As for Sigma, you cant go wrong. They are an excellent 3rd party manufacturer. Although i dont use their flashes.

Re: Flash for D80 portrait work

Is their much difference price-wise between Sigma and Nikons?

I agree with K, that you should avoid the 'cheap' brands..

Re: Flash for D80 portrait work

I have the SB600 and it is an excellent flashgun, I see your D80 is quote "Full compatibility with Nikon’s Total Imaging System" unquote, so you should be able to use it OFF camera ( several feet away)as a slave flash to the camera flash, but I would make sure first.

In other words your camera should act as a command flash which triggers other Nikon flashguns , ie SB600- SB800, don't think the SB400 can act as a slave flash but you would have to check this out

Other makes would not have this added bonus.
