Websites...

Your all sick of my tonight i can just feel it

ive asked a couple of friends can i do pics of their horses and dog to put on my website... i will not put them or their faces on the photos - theonly ones i will have faces on are the ones they get.....(never go public)... thats said.

If i were to photograph a show (free of charge)... with organisers permission - where would i stand if i wanted to put pictures on my website as a portfolio - like i said no faces no people - im getting the legal vibe from that and i do not want that backfiring.... so if anyone wanted A pic i would send it them free....

Just a discussion that ive got into that people would be peeved with their photos on site without permission(fair doos i understand) but even though im not charging and just building up my porfolio of equine and canine... whats the persmissions and legalitys of that???

I understand an outsider (if i wasnt designated photographer at a show) and i just took pics and put them on a site id go ape*hit if it were me in apic that i toally get..... but as invited to a show to photograph as a beginner - no charge - where do i stand???

thanks... what a headache and i aint even earning, its flipping hobby atm for along time!!

Re: Websites...

If they were taken in a public place and you took them, they're your photos and you can pretty much do what you like (within reason).

Not sure how it works on private functions, but I'd guess so long as the owner said it's ok...

Re: Websites...

see feedback ive been getting off others for e.g - if at an agility show and i took pics (and im not invited by organisers) and i put them on a site then they would go mad... fair comment as it would be if my dog was on an amatur site (that i had stumbled accross)...

but if i were meant to be there.... i dont see what the problem is as long as i dont put faces in (i know its legal to those over 16 but tbh i cannot be bothered with the hastle) and also i wouldnt appreciate it if it were me.... (trying to see this from both sides)....

for now im sticking with friends photos, and private photoshoots (for peoples dogs/horses) for practise as i cant legally charge without insurance apparanrly????

Re: Websites...

As far as I know, if your on public property then you can take what you wan't in this respect and don't have to ask for anyones permission. This is subject to photographing children etc where you might run into problems without the parents written permission.

Should you be on private ground or ground rented out to a particular organisation for a specific event then it is always best to ask about the policy the organisation has regarding the taking of pictures. Some events hire photographers especially to take photos which the photographers pay for the exclusivity.

No one as far as I know has said it can't be done without insurance, however it is prudent that you cover yourself for any eventuality.

Re: Websites...

At a dog show you would have to be careful and there are rules on entry forms regarding the photographing of other peoples dogs etc. If you took one of mine, I would be fine with it but I know many who wouldn't.

Re: Websites...

yep - i would only take pics if i were invited to a show as photographer.... never as a spectator.

(unless it was friends then imo thats ok)! (as im sure they would agree)!

id go mad unless it was a photographer that was invited to the show taking pics of my dogs.... even if they wernt selling pics - as long as they arnt just a 'joe blogg's whos contacted the show the imo its ok.
