Question about the 50mm f1.8

I have the canon 50mm f1.8 on my Christmas wishlist for taking portraits of the kids.
Will it also be a good lens for taking pictures of the kids out and about playing?
My macro lens at the moment seems the best for taking pictures of them at the park / beach etc but I have to be really far away from them!
I'm off on holiday next week and I am seriously tempted to sneakily sneak out and get it before then - but only if its going to be good for that kind of shot.
Kit 1
Canon 550D
Canon 50mm 1.8
Sigma 30mm 1.4
on loan: Tamron 90mm
Kit 2
Canon 300D (in use by my 10 year old)

Re: Question about the 50mm f1.8

It should be fine.

Nice big aperture which is handy if the light isn't the best and will throw the background out of focus nicely.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM

Re: Question about the 50mm f1.8

Don't know the canon, but the Nikon is great for kid portraits. I do a lot of portraits with mine, and love it! It's also really sharp. Thinking about it I have a Canon 50mm f1.8 (FD) lens - for my old AE1 Program - and that produces gorgoeus sharp images

Re: Question about the 50mm f1.8

They are also known as the nifty fifty Em - cos they are an excellent lens for the money. Superb for portraits (as they give that lush blurred background) and great for working in low light as they are a 'fast' lens (that ultra low 'f' number).

If you can get it I'd say go for it!
