Olympus E 510

After years of Nikons and Canon I find myself really drawn to the new Olympus E 510, two things are swaying me in that direction, anti shake technology and auto sensor cleaning does anyone have any experience of the E510 ?

Re: Olympus E 510

One thing I heard over and over when I was thinking of getting a cam with anti-shake is, that it will never be as good as anti-shake built into the lens... which is why people think Nikon and Canon have not adopted it...

Let us know what you end up doing!

Re: Olympus E 510

Hi Stewie,

I was watching Channel Five's The Gadget Show last week and they did a comparison of compact digitals.:

Fiji came top in the Compact and Budget categories with FinePix models; I still have an old FinePix 6900 and found them to have very good colour values.

Casio have just released a huge 12 megapixel compact camera which is reviewed by the Gadget Show here:

http://tinyurl.com/269msz

They rated it 3 Gs out of 5, but if you want a compact with a massive image this is a new level for compacts. Like my Kodak, the drawback is it is rather grainy in low light, but for 225 GBP it's a bargain.

They recently destruction tested two other digital compact cameras way beyond what they were made to withstand and both amazingly continued to take good shots. Tests included being dragged behind a 4WD pickup truck , on chains, around a quarry!! Some of the other tests were for image quality and all round usability. Can't remember what the cameras were, apart from one being an Olympus so you are certainly looking at the right sort of camera.
Kit 1
Kodak DCS ProSLR/n
Nikon 28-200mm AF ED f/35-5.6G (IF)
Nikon 24-85 AF ED f/35-4.5G (IF)

Re: Olympus E 510

No experience of this camera, but Olympus have always made good quality units with good features for a fair price..

As mentioned somewhere else here - they want to grown market share - so you'll certainly get a lot of camera for your money at the moment....

Re: Olympus E 510

"Which Camera" Gave the E-510 90% and a gold award for this back in September,.

The Olympus can certainly hold its own against Canon and Nikon. The Stabilisation will work wih any lens you attatch to it so you wont necessarily have to keep looking out for VR on your lens, however which is best (IS vs VR) i have no idea. Personally i think its a pointless feature if your planning on everyday shooting or portraits. IS really comes into play with long lenses and then your looking at most of those having VR built in anyway. If your looking at shooting in low light situations then the IS is definatly an option.

The E510 is somewhere between the D40x and D80, so your definatly getting value for money with it, and as Chris pointed out ealrier, Olympus are good cameras. The images are sharp, the camera is small and comapct and it has a 2x crop factor, which means smaller lighter lenses. It does have a live view feature which any other DSLR cams dont have, personally, i think its a pointless feature and should be overlooked when your deciding on which to buy - however, that said, it could come in useful at times.

If you want something that perfomes in a similar way as the D80, then this one is the way to go.

Vs D80
