Photography Competitions

I was wondering how many of us enter photography competitions - and whether it's worth us either using this thread to post details of new photography competitions we here about or perhaps even dedicate a section or sub-section to it.

Whaddya think? Maybe start with this thread first and then see how it goes?

If you're posting any, please:
  • Clearly state the title of the competition
  • If you can, please add the main prize
  • Add the details or information from the page (so people can see whether it's something they might actually want to enter)
  • Post the URL of the competition page
  • Please don't post links to pages/sites doing the same thing as this thread (listing comps to enter)

You can see an example in post 6

Re: Photography Competitions

Think it would be a good idea, not that I've entered any but must admit I do get suspicious as to which ones are real and which are a con.

Re: Photography Competitions

I've entered a few - and won a few and been awarded too. It always gives me a thrill to see my images gaining awards - even more so when the prizes land on my doorstep!

There are a few golden rules to increasing your chances of winning competitions, they are....

Rule One: Don't tell anyone everything you know.

Rule Two:

Re: Photography Competitions

Competition name: Photographers Wanted, by the Guardian newspaper
Main Prize: A two-day masterclass with professional photographer Alf Kumalo in Johannesburg, followed by an all-expenses paid trip around South Africa as the official photographer on an all-action adventure tour.

Quote:
Welcome to Photographers Wanted, a guardian.co.uk photography competition being run in association with South Africa Tourism.

As the title suggests, we’re looking for a photographer – but not just any old photographer. We’re after someone who can do justice to South Africa’s stunning scenery, wonderful wildlife and fabulous people.

The lucky winner of this competition will win a two-day masterclass with professional photographer Alf Kumalo in Johannesburg, followed by an all-expenses paid trip around South Africa as the official photographer on an all-action adventure tour. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: expect high-octane excitement and the chance to take some spectacular pictures. The winner will spend around two weeks in South Africa, departing the UK no earlier than 25 August 2010 and returning no later than 12 September 2010. The precise dates will be confirmed shortly.

The best of the images taken in South Africa will be displayed in the National Geographic Store on Regent Street, London, in October.

Full details of this prize can be found in our terms and conditions, which you should read carefully before uploading a photo.

The photos you submit need to capture one of three themes - adventure, landscape or people. You can only enter one photo for each theme. Three category winners will each receive a book of Alf Kumalo’s photography. One of the three will be chosen as the overall winner.

A few other key things to note. The three category winners will have to attend a meeting in London on 15 July, at which they will meet representatives from South Africa Tourism and be asked to discuss their work; all travel expenses will be paid for by South Africa Tourism. The competition is only open to UK residents. You cannot win more than category. The photos do not have to be newly taken but must be your own work, and they do not have to be of South Africa. They must be 5MB or less. The competition closes at 23:59 on 3 July 2010.

To provide inspiration we asked three photographers to share some of their images of South Africa: Jillian Edelstein, Steve Bloom and Neale Haynes. You can find those in our professionals’ gallery. Don’t feel you have to copy their efforts: we’re looking for originality, not mimicry.

Good luck.
