Next on my wish list

Next on my wish list is :-

Nikon 300mm/f4 ED-IF lens

Plus

Nikon AF-S TC-14E II Teleconverter.

However I will need to save for a bit.

Does anyone have any experience of this set up?

Re: Next on my wish list

Do I take the lack of comments as a negative or is it just that no one has experience of this lens?

Re: Next on my wish list

No experience The longest lens I own goes to 200mm these days. I'm having to hire a super duper telephoto when I go away, as I can't justify me owning one, as I wouldn't use it much.

Thanks Suzi. Enjoy your trip when you go. I like taking bird shots, so just want the clarity and sharpness at 300mm plus.

Re: Next on my wish list

I squeeze out 420mm for my 70-300mm VR Nikon lens. How? well only this particular lens the rear throat is deep enough to accept a TC without any damage I use a Sigma 1.4 TC which still lets in enough light to have very little affect on the sensor.

Yes I know everywhere they say it can't be done, that is because it depends on the f stop being used at to having to focus manually or not. Strange but true. I often use this combo and save a load of cash against the latest 80-400mm lens costing thousands.

Re: Next on my wish list

Cheers Bazza. I checked with WEX sometime ago and yes it will work. However I find the 70-300 VR lens very very soft at 300mm. I was thinking about the Sigma 50-500mm but for not a lot more I can get Nikon 300mm/f4 and Nikon 1.4 teleconverter both of which get great reviews in isolation BUT also importantly they seem to work perfectly together.

Re: Next on my wish list

I'm hiring the new version of the Nikon 80-400mm, supposed a nice zoom, I had a 70-300mm a while ago, and found it soft towards the 300mm too.

Re: Next on my wish list

What I've seen about the lens is all positive. I feel a full revue coming this way on the lens?

Re: Next on my wish list

I am having one for the whole of June, the fact that it's supposed to be a fairly decent zoom, but not too big or heavy really appeals, as I am going to have to carry it for two weeks all day, it's not as fast as some of the really high end zooms, but I think I'll cope, just hope I don't like it too much

Re: Next on my wish list

I have the 70-300 VR, never had any issues with softness.

70-300mm lenses
"Of the four lenses, the Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED comes out as the top choice for two reasons – firstly, it has the highest sharpness score of the quartet, managing 12P-Mpix and secondly, because it features Nikon’s Vibration Reduction system. With such a long focal range, having VR is a real benefit in achieving sharp shots while handholding and so this lens makes the best choice."
