Butterfly

I read in the paper the other day that these butterflies have been swarming all over the UK lately - well, we just got our share of them!

Re: Butterfly

Not my subject but good pictures. I like to see butterflies and can't say as I have noticed any significant increase in numbers in the garden or on my walks.

You have asked for opinions so just a couple of points. They look sharp at that size so that's good (hey, it's a Micro Nikkor!) but maybe a tad more DoF on the second image as the tail goes OoF. The latter two look like they have a colour shift towards blue compared to the first. I know you like natural subjects so I would guess publishers etc. would expect pictures to show either natural original colour or consistency with a set?

Colours can appear to change with exposure, colour temperature of the light falling on the subject and how the sensor is set to interpret it plus when we tweak in post processing. It tends to come to notice when we have a set of pictures rather than just one image. I had problems recently with a set of wedding pictures trying to get all the pictures to keep the same tone of pink in the dress and lilacs in the grooms tie.

Re: Butterfly

Thanks BC - very helpful indeed! I hadn't really noticed the DoF on the second image, so yes, that's something to consider (though of the three it was my least favourite). I think the colour shift is perhaps to do with A) lighting and B) where the butterfly was sat. In the first pic he's sat on a piece of rotten wood - and it was a very golden light - everything was sort of warm and brown looking - the first two were earlier in the day, and sat on top of the duck run. I think htey are both more accurate to the true colour than the first one, so if I'm making sense the first one is too warm rather than the other two being too blue? I think. As I say, it doesn't help they were sat on a bluey surface Would have preferred leaves - but hey - they were trying to sun themselves, I expect the gravel on the duck run was warm!
