Do you really need a new lens?

I bring up this point after 35 years of enjoying photography. In leaner years I learned to use the lens that was on the camera. It may be the stock 50 mm that used to come with most cameras or any other focal length you might mention.

Learn to "crop" when you shoot. I suppose "compose" would have been a more appropriate word. These days I use two "kit" lenses from Nikon, the 18-55 & 55-200 zooms that are readily available for my Nikon D40X. When I can justify it I may buy an additional polorizing filter. I'm presently switching the one I have between lenses.

If you learn the basics of good composition, exposure & Depth of Field Control you may find your lust for more lenses may subside.

When the need for a special lens arises you'll know the reason why you need, not want it. Keep shooting!

Re: Do you really need a new lens?

Yep, as the saying goes, it's not the camer but what's behind it makes the real difference.

Although I must say that 'nicer' cameras and better lenses just make it a little easier

Re: Do you really need a new lens?

No argument here. Long lenses are used in nature & sports photography. Super wide angle lenses are great for large group shots. I'm primarily speaking to folks who buy lenses just to buy lenses. Fishermen buy lres buy the bucket full. It's been said such lures are designed to catch fishermen, not fish. LOL
