RAW vs RAW compressed

Just wondered how much data is lost when using RAW compressed, and whether people think using RAW compressed is ok

Personally I am thinking about setting my camera to RAW compressed _and_ jpeg large, standard quality. That way I get the ease of use from the jpegs (load into photoshop > resize > export > then post on the web) yet the peace of mind that if I ever took such an astonishing photo (yeah right, in my dreams!) I have the RAW file to process it further.

Just a note for people not privy to why I find using raw an inconvienience; with many dslr raw files, photoshop does not read your camera's settings, such as white balance, colour contrast, sharpness etc - meaning you have to make those adjustments, again in the raw editor of photoshop (if you use the cameras own software you're ok, as they generally do read your cameras settings). And I don't want to use my cameras own software... because I prefer photoshop

Raw compressed

Re: RAW vs RAW compressed

I didn't even know there was such a thing.
I shoot Raw almost all the time. Its pretty much only if I want lots of conseqetive shots at a high frame rate that I turn it off.

If I had it on my camera I would only use compressed raw if it uses a lossless compression algorithm ( Huffmann)

Re: RAW vs RAW compressed

Hi Nav, I think there are three options on my camera, Compressed, Lossles Compressed, and Uncompressed. I was wondering how much the first two differ?

How many options are on your camera? (What do you have btw?)

Welcome to YoP look forward to seeing your photos

Re: RAW vs RAW compressed

An alternative might be Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0. At under $60. it handles RAW just fine while allowing you to save in PSD format. You could then edit further in Photoshop if you so desire. I have Photoshop 7.0 & Elements 6.0. I can do anything I want with speed & control.

Did not know you could get RAW compressed either, I use Elements not PS these days so no problem.

Re: RAW vs RAW compressed

Believe it not I very rarely ever use Photoshop anymore. Elements is to easy to use and very capable.

Re: RAW vs RAW compressed

For the sort of things I want to do Elements is fine, can always go back to PS should the need arise but it never has. Lets face it, if I can crop, and delete there is not too much else that someone of my standard really needs
