How important is image stabalisation to you?

Just wondering how important image stabalisation in a lens is to you?

Is it worth the extra cost? Or would you be happy to get the non-stablised version?

Re: How important is image stabalisation to you?

It depends on the lens I have IS on my 100-400 and wouldn't be without it .. because it is a long lens it helps to keep things steady ..I also have it on the 24-105 but don;t find it is as necessary as the actual lens is shorter

Re: How important is image stabalisation to you?

For walking about it's a good thing but I like to use a tripod whenever I can for decent landscape shots.

I certainly wouldn't avoid a lens if it didn't have IS/VR

Re: How important is image stabalisation to you?

If you shoot hand held and go out when it isn't sunny with a long lens you need it, simple as!!!

With my 55-200mm VR I could get sharp shots at 1/60th at 200mm that would not be possible with a non VR lens handheld unless you are a robot!

On faster glass when you are gonna shoot at f/3 or wider then it's not as critical but always good to have should you want a wider dof.

Re: How important is image stabalisation to you?

The Sony I use has built in IS, so EVERY lens you use with it is stabalised.

Re: How important is image stabalisation to you?

It depends on the situation, for "ordinary" held held shots, definately, but if you have a support such as a fence post or wall to give support, then maybe. Tripod use it is not needed. Also take into account distance, having to hold a 70-300mm lens at the 300mm end to get a picture is difficult without IS/VR or if trying to take a picture when its windy doesn't help either.

Re: How important is image stabalisation to you?

Since I've never used a stabalized lens I find it hard to justify any extra cost. Since I shoot outdoor scenes these days I use Aperature priority and have no issues with hand holding an 18-55mm or 55-200 mm zoom at 125th of a second.
