Osprey, Ruff and Curlew Sandpiper

Went out Osprey watching last week - was magical - watched it for about half an hour, fishing away, and eventually he caught something and flew off. What really got me is that we were the only ones there... fabulous to have such an incredible bird to yourself!

1. Ruff (very far away - but I was happy to get any shots!

2.

3. Ruff with Curlew Sandpiper - poor photo - but shows the size difference for those interested

4. Osprey!

5.

6.

7.

8. having a good old shake!

9.

10. (nice big one!)

Re: Osprey, Ruff and Curlew Sandpiper

The last two look much better when you click on them, think the last is my fave, also thinking the first one is nice as I've never seen one, so thanks Lucky thing to be able to see Osprey .

Re: Osprey, Ruff and Curlew Sandpiper

Thanks Suzi - yes, they do need to be viewed large - and I notice that Photobucket has once again softened them! *grump*... still - you get the idea.

The Ruff is lovely isn't it? You should Google Ruff male breeding plumage - incredible! I dream of seeing them like that <3

They're magnificent birds (Ospreys) and you've done well. How close did you get ?

Re: Osprey, Ruff and Curlew Sandpiper

Thanks Phil I got pretty close at times... but not as close as I'd have liked really - was still at full stretch most of the time really. Wish I'd been closer for him fishing, as it was pretty special to watch. I love that we get them most years, just passing through for a few days - means we can get pretty close and they're not at all bothered - but it's also still pretty serious birdwatching because you have to find them! At least it's usually the same time of year though

Re: Osprey, Ruff and Curlew Sandpiper

Thanks! Hehe - 6,7 and 8 were where it was shaking itself off mid flight after it had dunked itself trying (and failing) to catch a fish!
