Re: Taking pictures of structures does nothing for me (split thread)

Bazza - I think some of us found your remarks rather strange and to be honest rude, you can't post in another members picture thread, that their type of photography does nothing for you, and then go on about holiday snaps, and not serious photography. Also, wildlife photography is more challenging, when it isn't, all photography presents different challenges, and skills.

This is why several of us have commented Bazza. The statement was not appropriate for a persons picture thread

We all have different ideas about photography, and we all like different areas, but I would never go into another's thread of pictures, and say this subject does nothing for me etc.

"serious photography" I'm not serious about anything! Now, photoraphy is a fulfilling hobby, mainly for my enjoyment and for the time when I can't remember my own name, much less what "serious" means. LOL

I would like to know whose pictures I "attacked"? I havn't mentioned any names or particular photos! again things are being read into what I have posted and again wrong assumptions and conclusions have been drawn.
It seems to me that one cannot express ones own ((( opinions ))) if they conflict with others.
You posted it in someones thread!!!

Had you posted this as a general remark in a separate thread I doubt you would have got many if any replies - most people would probably have thought 'what is this crazy person on about, if he doesn't like a certain type of photography what do we care?'

But you didn't do that you posted it in someone else's thread. Not only is that going to derail that thread, but is rude to boot.

Don't kid yourself - there was absolutely no C&C about the photos in your post.

I would say it is more bad-mannered than anything else. As I said, nothing in your post was helpful to the OP in regards to the photos he posted.

Re: Taking pictures of structures does nothing for me (split thread)

Hmm, see a pic of mine in this thread and it mentioning the original comment being in someone's thread about taking a pic of structures....

Anywho, my 2penneth...

Taking a picture of architecture is challenging, a picture of something that doesn't move has to be technically spot on, there are as you say no excuses of why the exposure depth of field etc isn't right.

To do this I think takes more skill in some ways as the camera does less for you, for example for all my stuff that is of structures I manual expose and focus. Then there is the composition, this has too involve a lot more skill and thought that a sport or wildlife shot which is a reaction shot, unlike a shot of a structure. The subject makes the composition in an action shot, the photographer makes it in the structure shot.

I think I take some pretty damn good action shots, both sport and wildlife for which I have received awards in exhibitions and competitions. It is a type of photography that I find to be honest easy, and not that much of a challenge at times. Some shots I manually expose but on the whole I use aperture or speed priority and let the camera do some of the work, also with the camera on auto focus.

The taking of a structure photo is more challenging to me, it requires a lot more to get it anywhere half decent. The light has to be right, where you take the pic from considering the composition and the backgrounds. Things that are forgiven in a lot of wildlife photo's. It's something that I need to do a lot more work on before I start making pics that I'm happy with.

Action photo's are about, reactions and luck there is a lot more to structure photo's than reactions and luck.

So as it is so easy to take a structure photo show us some of yours.

Re: Taking pictures of structures does nothing for me (split thread)

When I was taught certain aspects of photography to form part of my work 20 years ago I used a Linhof 5x4 and architechtural photography was very difficult. focusiing under a black cloth and having to get all the perspective and verticals and horizontals spot on by shiftijng the film plane etc. Some of the structures (city nightscapes) I have seen in here have been very good as 'artistic' structure pictures. However I do think some pictures of buildings and objects have been more akin to 'record' shots. With respect, and no finger pointing to anyone here, but some architectural pictures on many websites just seem to comprise a recipe of regular building, reduce to monochrome, increase contrast, and add dramatic sky. It's good to see something a little different and technically perfect if it is a static subject.

Re: Taking pictures of structures does nothing for me (split thread)

I don't profess to be versed enough in photography to make a comment..but there is so much information in this thread, I can at least say it has been quite a learning experience.
I like buildings also and have several in mind I want to photograph over the next few months.
So thank you all.
